Fort Carson MATES Mechanical Upgrade

Fort Carson, Colorado • Completed December 2001

FCMFederal Government

Project Overview

26,000 SF vehicle maintenance facility mechanical systems upgrade featuring six-air-change ventilation for vehicle maintenance bays and specialized exhaust systems for heavy artillery equipment.

Facility Overview & Assessment

This project involved upgrading mechanical HVAC systems for a 26,000 S.F. mixed-occupancy vehicle maintenance facility comprised of:

  • Approximately 9,000 S.F. for vehicle maintenance (light commercial and heavy artillery equipment repair)
  • 8,000 S.F. for warehouse storage
  • 9,000 S.F. for office space, parts storage, and miscellaneous functions

Schendt Engineering Corp. prepared as-built drawings of the mechanical and electrical systems and evaluated the condition of existing equipment. The upgrade involved replacement of three make-up air handling units, the vehicle exhaust system, seven exhaust fans, installation of two rooftop units and installation of a welding exhaust boom.

Vehicle Maintenance Systems

The vehicle maintenance areas required a ventilation rate of 6 air changes per hour, provided by direct fired make-up air units located on the roof. Exhaust management was critical:

  • Up-blast roof exhaust fans ducted to within 18" of the floor to remove potentially flammable vapors
  • Fumes discharged upward into the air to minimize potential for re-circulation back into building
  • Vehicle exhaust system with five 26-foot long articulated arm booms
  • Rigid ductwork on booms with high-temperature flexible hose supported by balancer
  • Single exhaust fan designed to support three pieces of heavy artillery equipment simultaneously

Specialized Exhaust & Ventilation

The welding booth required a ventilation rate of 6 air changes per hour provided by:

  • Direct fired make-up air unit on roof
  • Up-blast exhaust fan mounted on roof
  • 14-foot long articulated arm exhaust system for local welding operations

Restroom and locker room areas utilized an indirect-fired unit, while office and classroom areas used gas-fired DX rooftop units with economizers. New ductwork was installed to properly distribute air to each space.

Electrical & Infrastructure

Electrical work for this project included:

  • New electrical service feeders
  • New lighting in the office area
  • Power distribution to all new mechanical equipment

Construction Cost: $249,115
