Project Overview

UFC-compliant Large Vehicle Search Facility for inspection of semi tractor/trailers at the main gate, featuring inspection pit, CCTV systems, driver waiting area, and armed overwatch position.

Project Scope

Schendt Engineering and HB&A were tasked with designing a Large Vehicle Search Facility at the Main gate of Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station to provide a UFC compliant inspection area for large semi tractor/trailers entering CMSFS. The design was site adapted from the existing vehicle search facility at Peterson Space Force Base (PSFB) West Gate.

The design of the new Large Vehicle Search Facility (LVSF) allows security personnel to perform adequate inspections of large vehicles and provide space for a rejection lane, allowing large vehicles to do a U-turn and exit the area if access is denied.

Inspection Pavilion Design

The pavilion was constructed of metal roofing and side panels to match the other facilities in the adjacent area. Key inspection features include:

  • Ladders, mirrors, and CCTV cameras to provide inspection of the top of the vehicle.
  • A pit for under carriage inspections.
  • A waiting area for drivers - a small enclosed facility with no windows and a glass door to allow guards to monitor the driver during the inspection.
  • New lighting and traffic light systems.
  • Validation that existing pop-up barriers were still properly located and met current UFC 4-022-01 code requirements.

Overwatch Position

The design of an overwatch position was also part of the scope. The overwatch option encompassed the following primary requirements:

  • Located adjacent to the Final Denial Barrier.
  • Equipped with an intercom, EFO controls to activate the barrier, and an enunciator to alert security personnel of the duress alarm being triggered at the other guard facilities.
  • Maximized visibility (360 degrees) with direct line of sight to the access control zone (Entry Control Facility and Inspection Area).
  • Gunports on each face - guard should be able to use a handgun and a shoulder fired weapon. Windows must not interfere with the capability to respond to an attack; windows must be capable of being fully opened/removed quickly or have a substantial gunport to enable unobstructed line of fire from the position.
  • Storage for all CBRN personnel protective equipment.
  • Construction materials meeting the requirements for UL 752 Level III.
